African Ringneck Parakeet < Feathered Frenzy

African Ringnecked Parakeets are not often found in the United States. The other subspecies, the Indian Ringneck Parakeet, is much more bountiful, due to the larger availability of color mutations, larger size, and cheaper price. However, the African Ringneck is a beautiful parrot that should not be overlooked. This species is sexually dimorphic, which means you can tell the two sexes apart visually. The mature male will have a dark band (black in the normal coloration) around his neck, hence the name "ringneck." Females and juveniles lack this ring. As their other name implies (Rose-Ringed Parakeet), they also have a lighter red ring that continues where the black leaves off. They have extremely long, tapering tails, approximately twice the length of their body. African ringneck parakeets are generally quiet birds, however, it should be noted that their cry can be quite piercing. The call is usually executed in the early morning and evening, as well as during any excitement (such as dinnertime!). These birds can usually learn to say a few words or simple phrases.
