Budgies are a delightful companion for anyone new to owning a parrot. They come in a rainbow of colors, are easy to take care of, and not as loud as their larger cousins. In America, budgies are often labeled somewhat inaccurately as "parakeets" in pet stores. Parakeets are actually a large group of parrots, including macaws, cockatiels, and many other unique species. Male budgerigars will develop a blue cere when they are approximately 4-5 months old. Any other color of cere is a female. Sadly, because this little parrot is so widely available, it is often found shoved into tiny cages and overcrowded. A single budgerigar needs a cage of at least 18"x18"x18". Most cages in pet stores advertised for budgies are too small! Ideally, a cage of 24"x18"x18" would be nice for a budgerigar, being longer than tall. Birds do not, after all, fly straight up and down! There is no such thing as "too big" of a bird cage. The bar spacing, though, needs to be no larger than 1/2".
