This species of macaw is the largest parrot, though as they say, sometimes the biggest animals are the gentlest. The hyacinth is no exception. He does, however, have a very large beak and he knows exactly how to use it. The hyacinth macaw is not a bird for everyone. They have very specific dietary needs, unlike the other macaws, that make dinnertime expensive and sometimes hard to find, as their primary source of food is palm nuts. Being so big, they also need very large, heavy-duty cages (preferably a flight). They are extremely loud. Their hefty price tag (usually $8k or more) helps ensure that this species is kept only by those who can afford it.
