There are two subspecies of Lilac Crowned Amazons, the Sonora and the Finsch's. These birds are green-bodied with a lovely light purple cap on their heads. The forehead and lores are a dark maroon. Lilac Crowns are one of the more even-tempered amazon parrots; the horror stories you often hear about amazons as they reach sexual maturity are not at all common with lilacs. This species loves to chew excessively, so many wooden and leather toys should be provided regularly. In addition, this intelligent bird needs plenty of daily handling and foraging toys to stay mentally stimulated and social. Bored birds often pluck themselves, a situation that is easier to prevent than to fix.
