Cockatoos, unfortunately, are very common at pet shelters and parrot rescues. Why? Their very cuddliness is their undoing. The bird wants, DEMANDS constantly snuggling and rubbing, and sometimes they develop a rather ear splitting screaming problem that gets much worse before it gets better. Rather than seek out professional help, or grin and bear it while under their advice, the bird is often dropped off to a rescue.
Or perhaps the eighty years of snuggling finally sinks in to the owner, who decides they would, after all, rather do other things. Again, that snuggly ball of fluff they were drawn to is ejected. Rejected. These birds are often sold at pet stores, drawing a number of customers with their adorable appearance and inclination to be held. Unfortunately, too many people buy these birds on impulse without thoroughly researching the animals first. It is afterwards that the long, long lifespan and constant, daily need for one-on-one attention are realized.
Our "Cockatoos are for LIFE" products are intended to make people stop and think. "What's that mean?" "How long do cockatoos live?" "What are their needs?" "Wow, really? That's a huge commitment." Because it IS a huge commitment that needs to be thought out carefully, especially considering the extremely long lifespan!
If our shirts stop just a single person from making an impulse buy, we've accomplished what we set out to do.
