The Patagonian Conure is the largest of the conures. There are three subspecies, the Greater, Lesser, and Andean. They are sometimes referred to as the "Burrowing Parrot" because of their nesting habits in high cliffs. Unfortunately, they are endangered in the wild, in part because the young babies are considered a delicacy in that part of the world. Patagonians themselves are a beautiful rainbow of greens; olive and yellow green mingling with gray. Their personality is often compared to that of a mini macaw, and indeed do seem to be a large macaw packed into a smaller package. These parrots love to climb, explore, and chew. They can be quite loud, however, and their needs and vocal level should be taken into account before bringing one home.
