Feathered Frenzy - Bird T-Shirts & Gifts > Quaker Parakeet > Who, Me?
|
Quaker Parakeets are considered to be an invasive species, which essentially means they were introduced by humans (by setting them "free" or getting lost), are able to survive and reproduce in this new alien environment, and supposedly cause harm to humans or the environment. This designation has resulted in the species to be declared illegal to own in many states. Other states have severe restrictions.
Now, the "harm" these guys do is building nests in telephone poles that can weigh several hundred pounds, and that, of course, can cause the pole to fall over. Farmers have reported that a flock of quakers can decimate an entire cornfield, but I have found no real proof of this. Quakers will eat anything - why descend upon corn, with little nutritional value?
So this design is for the quaker lovers out there for whom it just makes no sense to deem this curious and playful species as "invasive!"
