The Red-Sided Eclectus is possibly the most commonly kept Eclectus in captivity. It is sexually dimorphic, which means you can tell the two sexes apart visually. The cock is a brilliant green, with red visible on the body even with the wings folded. His beak is a "candy-corn" coloration. The hen has a black beak, red feathers, and a bright blue bib around her midsection. This subspecies can talk, and are quite good at imitating noises such as a faucet dripping or microwave beeping. All Eclectus parrots require a diet high in fresh foods, including fruits and veggies. Failure to provide such a basic necessity can result in serious health consequences. This bird is a naturally loud animal and that should be taken into account before bringing one home.
